Positive results for arginine dihydrolase, aesculin hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis and oxidase. Weak results for trypsin, acid
phosphatase and beta-glucosidase.
Can assimilate (API 20 NE): D-glucose, L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, potassium gluconate, capric
acid, malic acid and trisodium citrate.
Can utilize (Biolog GEN III system): trehalose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, alpha-D-glucose, D-mannose, D-fructose, D-galactose,
inosine, D-sorbitol, D-mannitol, D-arabitol, myo-inositol, glycerol, D- and L-serine, L-alanine, L-arginine, L-aspartic acid, L-glutamic
acid, L-histidine, L-pyroglutamic acid, D-galacturonic acid, D-gluconic acid, D-glucuronic acid, mucic acid, quinic acid, D-saccharic
acid, methyl pyruvate, citric acid, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, L-malic acid, Tween 40, gamma-aminobutyric acid, DL-beta-hydroxybutyric
acid, alpha-ketobutyric acid, propionic acid, acetic acid and formic acid.

Negative results for nitrate reduction, beta-galactosidase, indole production, urease, glucose and sucrose fermentation.
No assimilation of maltose, adipic acid and phenylacetic acid.
No utilization of dextrin, maltose, cellobiose, gentiobiose, sucrose, turanose, stachyose, raffinose, lactose, melibiose, methyl beta-D-

Gram-negative rods, approximately 0.8-1.0 x 1.5-2.5 µm. Motile by one to three polar
flagella. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on standard agar plates are pale yellow to greyish-white, opaque, round
with entire margin, raised, smooth, glistening and usually 1-2 mm in diameter after
growth for 2 days at 27 ºC. No water-soluble pigment is produced. Growth occurs at
4-30 ºC but not at 35 ºC. Positive for fluorescent pigment production and levan
formation. Aerobic.
Isolated from diseased Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) in Japan.
Pathogenic to Welsh onion and parsley.
Experimental infection: positive for potato soft rot and negative for tobacco hypersensitive reaction.
