Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Pseudomonadales, Family Pseudomonadaceae,
Genus Pseudomonas, Pseudomonas saxonica Hofmann et al. 2020.
Gram-negative rods, 1.0-2.0 x 1.6-3.5 µm. Motile. Non-spore-forming.
Smooth, translucent, glossy, round, and flat colonies of 1-2mm diameter appear after
incubation on TSA at 30 ºC for 24h. Additionally, smooth, beige, glossy, round and
convex colonies that are brighter and have a smaller diameter of 0.5-1mm are
present. Production of fluorescent and non-fluorescent pigments on King B agar is
variable. No pigment is produced on King A agar. Grows on cetrimide agar and R2A
agar. Shows no beta-haemolysis on blood agar. Grows at 4-34 ºC (optimally at 25-29
ºC) pH values between 5.5 and 8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0-7.0) and in 7.0% NaCl (w/v;
optimum, 0.5-1.0%). Aerobic; no anaerobic growth.
Isolated from skimmed milk concentrate and bovine raw milk in Germany.

Positive results for arginine dehydrolase, catalase, citrate utilization, aesculin hydrolysis, lipase, oxidase, acid production from: D- and
L-arabinose, D-arabitol, cellobiose, D-fructose, D- and L-fucose, D-galactose, D-glucose, glycerol, gentiobiose, lactose, D-lyxose, D-
mannose, D-mannitol, maltose, melibiose, D-ribose, L-rhamnose, D-sorbitol, L-xylose (only the type strain is positive) and D-xylose.
Can utilize as sole carbon source: L-arabinose, fructose, galactose, mannose and mannitol.
Negative results for gelatin hydrolysis, beta-galactosidase, H2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction,
denitrification, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, urease, proteolysis on skimmed milk agar, starch hydrolysis, Voges–
Proskauer reaction, acid production from: D-adonitol, N-acetylglucosamine, amygdalin, arbutin, L-arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol, methyl
alpha-D-glucoside, glycogen, inulin, inositol, potassium-gluconate, methyl alpha-D-mannoside, melezitose, raffinose, L-sorbose,
salicin, sucrose, trehalose, turanose, D-tagatose, xylitol and methyl beta-D-xylopyranose.
No utilization of: myo-inositol, sucrose and trehalose.
