Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-negative rods, 0.7-1.0 x 1.4-3.0 µm. Motile by polar flagella.
Colonies are white to cream in coloration, smooth and circular, and 2.0-2.2mm in
diameter when grown on nutrient agar (Difco) and incubated for 48h at 28 ºC. Produce
a diffusible fluorescent pigment when grown on King B agar. Can grow at 15-32 ºC,
optimal growth occurring between 21-32 ºC (no growth at 4 or 41 ºC), at pH 5-6 and in
1-4.0% NaCl (no growt in 8% NaCl). Aerobic.
Isolated from muskmelon and watermelon seedlings affected by stem rot and wilting in Serbia.
Produce stem rot and wilting in melons. Negative for tobacco hypersensitive response. Positive for tomato hypersensitive response.
Experimental infection: inoculation of watermelon (
Citrullus lanatus) and squash (Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo) seedlings with
KFB 138T led to the development of severe disease symptoms.

Positive results for oxidase activity.
Can utilize as sole carbon source (Biolog GEN III): acetic acid, L-alanine, alpha-D-glucose, D-mannose, D-fructose, D-galactose,
D-fucose, inosine, D-fructose-6-phosphate, D-aspartic acid, D- and L-serine, L-aspartic acid, L-glutamic acid, L-pyroglutamic acid,
D-glucuronic acid, glucuronamide, mucic acid, quinic acid, D-saccharic acid, L-lactic acid, citric acid, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, D- and
L-malic acid and gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, levan production, pectolytic activity.
No utilization of: L-arginine, dextrin, D-maltose, D-trehalose, D-cellobiose, gentiobiose, sucrose, D-turanose, stachyose, D-raffinose,
alpha-D-lactose, D-melibiose, beta-methyl-D-glucoside, D-salicin , N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, N-acetyl-beta-D-mannosamine,
N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, N-acetyl neuraminic acid, 3-methyl glucose, L-fucose, L-rhamnose, D-mannitol, D-arabitol,
D-glucose-6-phosphate, gelatin, glycyl-L-proline, L-histidine, D-galacturonic acid, D-gluconic acid, p-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid, methyl
pyruvate, D-lactic acid methyl ester, bromosuccinic acid, alpha-hydroxybutyric acid , beta-hydroxy-D,L-butyric acid, alpha-ketobutyric
acid, acetoacetic acid, propionic acid and formic acid.

Variable utilization of: myo-inositol, glycerol, D-sorbitol, L-galacturonic acid and Tween 40.
