Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Macrococcus, Macrococcus bovicus

Old synonym: Staphylococcus bovicus Ballard et al. 1995.
Gram positive cocci, nonmotile, nonsporing, (1.4-2.5 μm in diameter). Occur singly or
grouped in pairs or tetrads.
Colonies are slightly convex, entire, butyrous, glistening, opaque, 4 mm in diameter,
pale yellow to medium orange. Partial hemolysis (greening) of horse and bovine
blood. Aerobic, no growth anaerobically. Optimum temperature 35 ºC.
Media: Trypticase Soy Agar ± 5% sheep blood, BHI agar, P agar.
Isolated from cattle, horses, and ponies. The type strain was isolated from a cow's skin. Resistant to novobiocin. Susceptible to
lysostaphin.
