Gram-positive cocci, nonmotile, nonsporing.
Nonpigmented, opaque, glistening, S-type colonies; 1.5-2 mm in diameter after 24
hours incubation on blood agar and 3.5-4.5 mm after incubation for 3 days at 37 ºC on
P agar. Facultatively anaerobic, growth temperature 37 ºC (range 25-42 ºC).
Isolated from European otters (Lutra lutra). Sensible to novobiocin and lysostaphin.
Unknown (maybe otter pathogen). Only 3 strains have been isolated from mammary gland and supra mammary lymph node of dead
otters.

Positive results for nitrate reduction, alkaline phosphatase, urease, coagulase-rabbit
plasma, deoxyribonuclease, beta-galactosidase, catalase, acid production from:
mannose, lactose, trehalose, mannitol (some strains negative), glucose, galactose
and xylose.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, oxidase, hyaluronidase and clumping factor.
Some commercial kits may not include Staphylococcus lutrae in their databases (e.g. API Staph) and misidentifications may occur (admin note).
