Type species of the genus.
Gram-positive cocci, 1.0-2.5 μm in diameter, occuring singly, in pairs, tetrads or
clumps. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are round, smooth, and form a pink-red, nondiffusible pigment. In
liquid medium the cultures are slightly turbid and form a viscous sediment. Strictly
aerobic. Moderately halophilic; growth occurs in media containing 0.9-25% NaCl;
optimum 10% NaCl. Grows at 15-40 ºC; optimal growth at 37 ºC. Grows in pH
6.0-9.0; optimum pH 8.0.
Isolated from a marine saltern in Spain, salted meat, and salted horse hide.
Undetermined.
Positive results for catalase, casein hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis, nitrate reduction, oxidase & starch hydrolysis.
Can utilize as sole carbon and energy sources: D-gluconolactone, D-glucosamine, D-melibiose, sucrose, D-trehalose, erythritol,
ethanol, meso-inositol, propanol, D-sorbitol, N-acetylglucosamine, aconitate, alpha-aminobutyrate, benzoate, butyrate, citrate,
fumarate, DL-glycerate, D-gluconate, hippurate, DL-malate, propionate, quinate and D-tartrate.
Negative results for aesculin hydrolysis, arginine decarboxylase, Simmons’ citrate, H2S production, indole production, beta-
galactosidase, lysine decarboxylase, methyl red test, ornithine decarboxylase, phenylalanine deaminase, urease, Voges–Proskauer,
acid production from: arabinose, fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, glycerol, lactose, maltose, D-mannitol, sucrose, D-trehalose and
D-xylose.
Does not utilize: acetate, adonitol, D-amygdalin, L-arabinose, L-aspartic acid, betaine, creatine, caprylate, D-cellobiose, dulcitol,
esculin, ethionine, D-fructose, D-fucose, D-galactose, D-glucose, DL-glycerol, glucuronate, para-hydroxybenzoate, inulin, lactose,
maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, malonate, oxalate, pyruvate, L-raffinose, L-rhamnose, ribose, salicin, saccharate, salicylate, starch,
suberate, succinate and D-xylose.
