saccharolyticus Kilpper-Balz and Schleifer 1984.
Synonyms: Micrococcus saccharolyticus Foubert and Douglas 1948; Peptococcus saccharolyticus Douglas 1957.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.6-1.0 μm in diameter, nonmotile, nonsporing.
Colonies are raised, circular, opaque and gray to white or faintly yellow on agar
containing hemin, 0.5-2.0 mm in diameter.
Strictly anaerobic (or grows better anaerobically than aerobically), 37 ºC / 48 hours
incubation. No growth at 15 ºC. Media: Trypticase Soy Yeast extract Agar ± 5% sheep
blood Trypticase Soy Yeast extract Broth, P agar.
Isolated from human clinical samples (blood, skin). Sensible to novobiocin and lysostaphin. Resistant to lysozyme.
Flora of normal human skin but some endocarditis cases reported.

Positive results for catalase (weak unless medium contains hemin), benzidine test,
nitrate reduction, arginine dihydrolase, acid production from glucose, glycerol,
mannose and fructose.
Negative results for urease, oxidase, coagulase-rabbit plasma, clumping factor, beta-glucosidase, amylase, esculin hydrolysis,
gelatinase, H2S production, indole production, acid production from: arabinose, cellobiose, salicin, lactose, galactose, raffinose,
xylose, sucrose, trehalose, mannitol and xylitol.
Variable results for acetoin production.
