Gram-negative, curved rods, motile by 1 or more flagella. No lateral flagella on solid
media, no swarming on solid media.
Can grow in nutrient broth with: 1% & 6% NaCl. No growth in 0%, 8%, 10% & 12%
NaCl. Growth occurs at 30 & 35 ºC. No growth at 4 or 40 ºC.
Facultative anaerobe. Hemolysis on horse blood agar.
Found in water, marine fish and shellfish. Sensible to O/129 vibriostatic agent (10 & 150 µg).
Is the causative agent of epizootic disease in marine fish and shellfish, producing the terminal hemorrhagic and septicemia in eels,
ayu, rainbow trout, salmonids.
Multiflagellate forms are correlated with virulence.

Positive results for Voges-Proskauer (1% NaCl), arginine (1% NaCl / 7 days), gelatin
hydrolysis (1% NaCl, 22 ºC), acid production from D-glucose, D-mannose, D-sorbitol,
sucrose, nitrate reduced to nitrite, oxidase and lipase are positive.
Negative results for lysine (1% NaCl), ornithine (1% NaCl), gas production from D-glucose, acid production from D-adonitol,
D-arabitol, dulcitol, myo-inositol, lactose, melibiose, raffinose, L-rhamnose, salicin and D-xylose.
Variable results for indole production (Heart Infusion Broth, 1% NaCl), acid production from L-arabinose, cellobiose, D-galactose,
D-mannitol, maltose and trehalose.
